They're the only hire centre with traffic-free access straight onto the trail network — you collect the bike and you're on Old Bob's or heading for the Verderers within a minute. No driving, no faff

The practical bits — worth reading before you turn up:

• Book online, or walk in if they've got availability. You can't book over the phone.

• Same flat rate whether you have it two hours or all day — no half-day discount, so an early start makes sense.

• You must be 18+ to hire. E-bikes are 14+ to ride.

• Bring physical photo ID — a UK driving licence or passport, plus proof of address. Photos of your ID won't be accepted. Visiting from outside the UK? Bring proof of your UK accommodation address too.

• Card pre-authorisation: £1,000 per e-MTB, £250 per e-leisure or full-suspension bike. You'll need a physicalbank card. Overnight hire is pre-authorised at full value.

• No accessories on e-bikes — child seats, trailers and tagalongs can't currently be fitted to any of their e-bikes. Worth knowing if you were planning to tow a child or dog.

Dean Forest Cycles — Parkend, 3 miles away

The one to pick if: you want gravel or road, or you're staying in Parkend.

Family-run, and riders rate them highly for service and fair pricing — the reviews consistently mention staff going out of their way, particularly on repairs. They also do gravel bikes, which Pedalabikeaway's mountain-focused fleet doesn't really cover.
 

Worth knowing: free parking with bike rental, and there's a café on site — the pasties get repeated mentions.

The trade-off: you're three miles from the trailhead, so you'll ride in along the Colliers Trail or drive. Fine for a leisurely day; less ideal if you want maximum laps of the DH tracks. However, access to the family tree is excellent, and there's some good off-piste riding if you can find it. 
 

GBG Bikes — adapted hire

The one to pick if: you or someone in your group needs an adapted cycle.

Goals Beyond Grass are a Gloucestershire charity running accessible bike hire at the Cycle Centre every Wednesday, 10.30 am–1 pm. Other days can be arranged by contacting them directly. They provide adapted bikes suited to a range of disabilities.

Pre-booking is essential for GBG — unlike the others, you can't just turn up.

Three tips

1. Book ahead. Sunny weekends and school holidays clear the fleet out, and you can't book by phone — so do it online the night before rather than hoping.
    

2. Start early. It's a flat rate whatever the duration, so a 9 am pickup gets you far more riding for the same money than an 11 am one.
    

3. Don't over-bike or under-bike it. A hardtail is genuinely fine for the Verderers. But if you're heading for the downhill tracks, the full-suspension is worth the extra — it's not just comfort, it's control.
