eMTB in the Forest of Dean

Everything you need to know about riding an electric mountain bike at Cannop — from someone who rides one here every week.

Which trails are suitable?

E-bikes have changed how a lot of people ride the Forest of Dean, and mostly for the better. More laps, bigger loops, less pushing, and riders getting out who otherwise wouldn't. But there are a few things worth knowing before you turn up.

The short version: pedal-assist e-bikes (Class 1, up to 250W, assist cutting out at 15.5mph) are permitted on all the waymarked trails at Cannop, same as any other mountain bike. Throttle-controlled bikes and anything over the legal limit are not — they count as motor vehicles, and they're not allowed in the forest.

Verderers (Blue, 11.3km) — brilliant on an e-bike. The climbs stop being a chore, so you arrive at the Dragon's Tail with fresh legs and enjoy it properly. Easily two or three laps in a session.

Freeminers (Red, 12km) — this is where an e-bike really earns its keep. The switchback climbs are genuinely hard work on a normal bike; on an e-bike, you can spend your energy on the technical descents instead. The full Adit extension (17km) becomes very doable in an afternoon.

Colliers / Family Trail (14.5km) — pleasant, but honestly, an e-bike is overkill here. It's flat gravel; you don't need the help. However, if you have some tired kids in tow, a great way to get them back.

Downhill tracks — plenty of people ride e-bikes on the DH runs and pedal back up rather than pushing or paying for uplift. Heavier bike, so it handles differently on the steeper stuff — but a full-power e-MTB with decent travel copes fine.

Old Bob's (Green, 2km) — good place to get used to a new e-bike before committing to a longer loop.

Range — will you make it round?

Realistically, on a modern full-power e-MTB (roughly 600–800Wh battery):

  • Verderers: One lap uses very little. You'll manage three or four laps comfortably.

  • Freeminers full loop: a decent chunk of battery, but you'll get round with plenty spare on Eco/Trail modes.

  • A full day, multiple loops plus DH laps: this is where you'll want to manage your modes. Eco on the climbs, Turbo when you actually need it.

The honest advice: the Forest of Dean isn't the Alps. Total climbing is modest. Range anxiety here is mostly unwarranted — if you're on a full-power bike with a healthy battery, you'll be fine for a normal day's riding.

Charging

There's no public e-bike charging at the Cycle Centre. Plan to arrive charged.

If you're staying locally, most accommodation will happily let you charge overnight — worth asking when you book.

E-bike hire

Pedalabikeaway, on site at Cannop, hire e-MTBs. Worth booking ahead, especially at weekends and in school holidays — they go fast.

Dean Forest Cycles in Parkend (about 3 miles away) also hire bikes.

We run free demo rides on the Specialized Levo 4 — not a car park test ride, but a proper lap on the trails you'd actually be buying the bike for.  Link to Levo 4 Demo page

Etiquette — the honest bit

E-bikes are still a bit divisive on the trails. A few things that go a long way:

  • Don't blast past people on climbs. You're on a motor; they're not. It's not a race, and nobody enjoys being buzzed.

  • Give way and be gracious. The goodwill costs you nothing and does the whole e-bike a favour.

  • Uplift etiquette on the DH: if you're pedalling up, use the push-up track, same as everyone else.

Servicing

E-bikes are heavier, faster, and put more load through the drivetrain, bearings and brakes. They need servicing more often than an analogue bike, not less.

Bikes for Brains Workshop in Edge End handles e-bike servicing, bearings and suspension.
